Happy Thanksgiving
From all of us at Saint Mary Debre Sina Tewahdo Orthodox Church, we wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and may it truly shine in the coming days in your homes, among your family/friends and among your neighbors and acquaintances!
This meaningful Holiday started 393 years ago in the spirit of sharing. In 1621, the recently arrived Immigrants known as the Pilgrims from Plymouth, England, wanted to share their successful corn harvest and invited the local Indians in Plymouth, Mass. The Indians, in return, brought cooked deer meat and the festival lasted three days. It was a day of sharing not only with family and friends, but neighbors. Interestingly, we have been celebrating this in Eritrea further than 393 years! We don’t call it Thanksgiving, we call it ንግደት. Historically ንግደት is celebrating the local town/village’s Church (kidane mhret, abune aregawi, mariam hidar zion, etc..) but extends to the entire ገዛውቲ.
A vivid memory we all share as kids during ንግደት is carrying Mom’s gift of እንገራ, ኣረቂ or ሽኮር to friends, family and neighbors visited, be it local or very far away in the villages. We knocked door to door, families, friends and neighbors we haven’t seen in a while and catch up. It is a unique day we instantly recognize and identify with. This is remarkably Thanksgiving we call ንግደት.
For this same reason, we are inviting our community to come and celebrate with us ንግደት ማርኣም ሕዳር ጽዮን on Saturday November 29th – 8AM. Service will start at 8AM, followed by ንግደት lunch with us. Please come and share our faith, our tradition, our Thanksgiving and spirit it represents!
